Find out the challenges and limitations of repairing smart batteries

Most laptop batteries are smart. This means that the pack consists of two parts: the chemical battery and the digital battery. Batteries for medical and other industrial devices are also made smart, and the most common protocol is the System Management Bus, better known as SMBus technology.  See BU-601: Inner Working of a Smart Battery

The typical SMBus battery has five or more battery connections consisting of positive and negative battery terminals, thermistor, clock and data. The connections are often unmarked; however, the positive and negative are commonly located at the outer edges of the connector and the inner contacts accommodate the clock and data. The one-wire system combines clock and data. For safety reasons, a separate thermistor wire is brought to the outside. Figure 1 illustrates a battery with six connections.

Figure 1: Terminal connection of a typical laptop battery

The positive and negative terminals are usually placed on the outside; no norm exists on the arrangement of the other contacts.

Some batteries are equipped with a solid-state switch that is normally in the off position and no voltage is present at the battery terminals. Connecting the switch terminal to ground or pulling it up often turns the battery on. If this does not work, the pack may need a proprietary code for activation. Battery manufacturers keep these codes a well-guarded secret to which even service personnel have no access.

How can you find the correct terminals. Use a voltmeter to locate the positive and negative battery terminals and establish the polarity. If no voltage is available, a solid-state switch in the off position may need activating. Connecting the voltmeter to the outer terminals, take a 100-Ohm resistor other values may also work, tie one end to ground, and with the other end touch each terminal while observing the voltmeter. Also try lifting the terminal up to voltage. If not responsive, the battery may be dead or the pack is locked by a security code. The 100-Ohm resistor is low enough to engage a digital circuit and high enough to protect the battery against a possible electrical short.

Establishing the connection to the battery terminals should now enable charging. If the charge current stops after 30 seconds, an activation code may be required, and this is often difficult if not impossible to obtain.

Some battery manufacturers add an end-of-battery-life switch that turns the battery off when reaching a certain age or cycle count. Manufacturers argue that customer satisfaction and safety can only be guaranteed by regularly replacing the battery. Such a policy tends to satisfy the manufacturer more than the user. Consumer and industrial users vote against such practices.

If at all possible, connect the thermistor during charging and discharging to protect the battery against possible overheating. Use an ohmmeter to locate the internal thermistor. The most common thermistors are 10 Kilo Ohm NTC, which reads 10kΩ at 20 C 68 F. NTC stands for negative temperature coefficient, meaning that the resistance decreases with rising temperature. In comparison, a positive temperature coefficient PTC causes the resistance to increase. Warming the battery with your hand may be sufficient to detect a small change in resistor value when looking for the correct terminal on the battery.

When the chemical battery is restored, the fuel gauge might not work, is inaccurate, or will provide wrong information. After repackaging, the battery may need some sort of initialization/calibration process. Simply fully charging and discharging the pack to reset the flags might do the trick. A flag is a measuring point to mark and record an event. See BU-603: Battery Calibration

The circuits of some smart batteries must be kept alive during cell replacement of the cells. Disconnecting the voltage for only a fraction of a second can erase vital data in the memory. The lost data could contain the resistor value of the digitized shunt that is responsible for the coulomb counter and other data. Some integrated circuits IC responsible for fuel gauge function have wires going to each cell, and the sequence of assembly must to be done in the correct order.

To assure continued operation when changing the cells, supply a secondary voltage of same voltage level through a 100-Ohm resistor to the circuit before disconnection. Remove the outside supply only after the circuit receives voltage again from the new cells. An analogy of cell replacement in a smart battery is open-heart surgery where doctors must also keep all organs of the patient alive.

Anyone repairing an SMBus battery needs to be aware of compliance issues. Unlike other tightly regulated standards, the SMBus allows some variations, and this can cause problems when matching battery packs with existing chargers. The repaired SMBus battery should be checked for compatibility before use. More information on SMBus is available on www.sbs-forum.org and www.acpi.info. Batteries for critical uses, such as heathcare, are typically replaced and not repaired.

Simple Guidelines when Repairing Battery Packs

Only connect cells that are matched in capacity. Do not connect cells of different chemistry, age or capacity. Use a slow charger to bring all cells to the same state-of- charge.

Charge and discharge Li-ion batteries with a working protection circuit. Each cell must be monitored individually A temperature rise in a cell will hint to anomalies.

Include a temperature sensor that disrupts the charge current on high heat.

Pay special attention when using an unknown brand of cells. Some intrinsic safety features may be missing in Li-ion.

Li-ion is sensitive to reverse polarization. Observe correct polarity.

Li-ion battery with physical damage or low voltage should not be used.

laptop battery pack computer internet security

BU-911: How to Repair a Laptop Battery. Find out the challenges and limitations of repairing smart batteries. Most laptop batteries are smart.

1. Super high capacity: 153 Watt-hour, or 42,500mAh if rated as other brand external batteries on market that just simply add all battery cells Amp-hour together. It may add extra 6 12 hours for most laptop computers. This is a rough estimate. Actual running time varies, depending on notebook computer s configurations and what kind of applications running. Its 19V DC output can be used to power and charge laptop notebook computers and tablet PCs that require 18V 20V DC power. It has up to 2 3 times battery run time 153 Watt-Hour capacity, compared to 40 60 Watt-Hour capacity  of most notebook computer batteries.

2. This battery also has a 5V USB port. It can power and charge Cell phones, PDAs and other electronic devices that can be powered from 5V USB ports.

Through the 5V USB port, this battery can provide 100  hours talk time/internet time for iPhone iPhone cable and connector not included. 900 hours for mp3 player 1800 hours for eBook Use the 5V USB port

3. On/Off Switch: The On/Off switch on the battery front not only provides convenience, it is also specially designed to provide safety protection: when the battery switch is turned on and output cable is plugged, the battery will output power to output cable. However, the battery will not be turned on if it detects no output cable is plugged even the On/Off switch is turned on. This way, even you forget to turn off the battery switch after the unplug the cable, the battery will turn off by itself. If the On/Off switch is accidentally turned to On without notice, the battery will still keep in Off mode if no output cable is plugged in the output port.

4. This battery can provide 12V DC power for LCD monitors, DVD players, digital frames and other devices that require 12V DC power.

If you have a car charger for your device, you can use this battery together with your car charger to power your device. To do so,  set the battery output voltage at 12V, use an optional Cigarette Lighter Socket Adapter to convert the battery output port to a cigarette lighter socket like this:

The cigarette lighter adapter is optional,  not included in the battery pack.

5. Its compact size can easily fit into a laptop/notebook carry bag.

Laptop computer and bag not included.

Although the BP160 is called external lithium-ion battery pack, it may be more accurate to consider it as a smart power supply that powers from lithium battery cells. Unlike a traditional battery pack, which may just simply connect battery cells together in serial or parallel with simple protection, the BP160 has following unique features:

1. Strong, impact resistant outer casing.

2. Fully functional electronic board inside to control the input voltage and current that actually applied to battery cells when in charging mode.

3. Built-in DC to DC converter to supply regulated stable power at different user selectable voltages.

4. On/off switch. The power pack will only turn on when both output cable is plugged in the output port and the on/off switch is turned on. This will effectively prevent the power pack to be activated accidentally.

5. Many safety protection functions such as Over-charge protection, Over-discharge protection, Over current protection, Over temperature protection, Short circuit protection.Technical Specifications

Battery Capacity Rating:  153 Watt-hour Wh capacity means the battery can theoretically last 153 hours if the device it powered only needs 1 Watt power, or 1 hour if the device need 153W power. A typical 6-cell internal notebook battery capacity is about 49 Watt-hour. A typical 12-cell internal notebook battery capacity is about 98 Watt-hour.

There are many different ways to rate a battery capacity on market. If we rate this battery capacity like some other brand external batteries on market that just simply add all battery cells Amp-hour capacity together, then this battery capacity is 42,500mAh or 42.5Ah. This may be a little confusing. We suggest using Watt-hour instead of Amp-hour to compare capacities of different batteries. Watt-hour or Wh, is a more accurate unit to show the power capacity than Amp-. Hour Ah that was used before. The Watt-Hour unit means the wattage that the battery can provide within one hour.

4.  Plug the connector and output cord

After select right connector, plug it on the Z6 output cord, then plug output cord to the battery output port:

Just that simple, now you are ready to use it.

Note: If your notebook internal battery is a working battery and has been fully charged, you can leave it in your notebook. Otherwise, we recommend you removing the internal battery from your notebook to maximize the external battery running time. The external battery will still work fine if you leave non-charged internal battery in the notebook, but it may not reach the maximum running time since it needs to charge the internal battery at same time when it is powering the computer.

How long can this external battery run.

This battery s capacity is about 153Wh Watt-hour :

you can compare this battery s capacity with your internal battery capacity to figure out how long this battery can run your notebook. For example, if your notebook internal battery output is: 10.8V 4000 mAh, then, your notebook internal battery capacity is:

11.1V x 4400 mAh 49 Wh Watt-hour.

This external battery capacity is about 150/49 3 times of your internal battery capacity.

If your internal notebook battery can run 2 3 hours, then the external battery pack can theoretically run about :  6 9 hours.

This is a rough estimate. Actual running time varies, depending on notebook computer s configurations and what kind of applications running. For example, screen brightness, the use of the CPU, the hard drive, the CD drive, and other peripherals results in an additional drain upon the battery, effectively reducing the battery s run-time. The total run-time of the battery is also heavily dependent upon the design of the notebook. To ensure maximum performance of the battery, optimize the computer s power management features. Refer to the computer manual for further instructions.

Using two batteries together:

If one battery can not provide enough running time, you may use 2 batteries. To maximum running time, using each battery separately. However, you may also connect 2 batteries in serial for convenience.

1. Set battery 1 output voltage at 19V

2. Connect battery 1 output to battery 2 input using the battery output cable.

3. Set the battery 2 output voltage to the voltage your device needed.

4. Connect the battery 2 output to your device power input jack using the output cable and connector tip if needed.

5. Turn on both batteries.

Note: This actually is using battery 2 to provide output power while using battery 1 to charge battery 2. The total running time will be less than running two batteries separately since some power will lost during the charging process. To maximum running time, it is recommended to use each battery separately.

Compatibility:

This battery will work for devices  that requires 12V or 19V DC power.  If your  device power adapter output voltage is 11V 13V or 18V 20V, this battery should work for you as long as one of the connector tips fits the DC power input jack.  If your  device power adapter output voltage is not within the range,  this battery may not work for you.
